About Us

TRACE is the specialized employee screening practice of TACT.

Founded in 2001, TACT is an independent full service risk consulting firm with offices or operations in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad Jaipur and Lucknow.  

The firm was founded on the belief that Indian defense services, law enforcement, legal and finance professionals are better positioned to appreciate the complexity of operational risks encountered by multinationals and also to deliver a multi perspective risk mitigation solution.

The TACT team is a structured mix of retired armed forces and law enforcement personnel, most of whom have had a distinguished record in counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism operations. Partnering them are legal and finance professionals who are well versed in Indian corporate laws and global accounting standards. This is an optimal combination and is hard to beat as most clients have experienced.

TACT’s solutions, therefore, are not only strategically and operationally astute but also well within the Indian legal framework.  The firm only provides legally sound solutions. TACT has successfully completed more than a hundred man years of professional consulting in the risk mitigation practice.

Leadership Team 

Air Commodore S. Murugan (Retd).

Senior Corporate Advisor

A War Veteran, Air Commodore Murugan has 31 years of meritorious service with the Indian Air Force behind him. In command, he was assigned the biggest bases; in staff he was responsible for Maintenance, Planning and Policy formulation, Quality Control and Inspection and also directing Maintenance Information Systems. Extensively experienced in all theatres, he was awarded a Vishist Seva Medal (Third highest award in its category) by the President of India in 1968 for outstanding dedication and meritorious Service.

A qualified Telecommunication Engineer with a degree from the Engineering College at Guindy, Air Commodore Murugan has also been trained extensively at international institutes like Selenia Inc, Rome, Italy, Masters in Operations Research from the Institute of Technology, Cranfield, U.K and Defence Management with special emphasis on Strategic Planning and Policy Making in Naval Postgraduate SchoolMonterey, California, U.S.A. He was also a member of the high-powered La Fontaine Committee to study Aircraft accidents and make recommendations.

He taught Quantitative Management Subjects like Operations Research, Statistical Analysis,   System Analysis etc at the Institute of Defence Management, Secunderabad for 5 years.

Post retirement he joined Tata Electronics as its General Manager and Chief Executive and turned around the loss making company into a profitable high-tech   production organization within a year. He held this position for seven years. He was responsible for design and Production of High-Technology Systems like Simulators, Ruggedised Computers and Missile Systems to three Services, Indian Railways, DRDO and ISRO. 

He is presently with TACT India where the firm benefits from his very diverse yet involved experience of both, the uniformed service and the hard core corporate world wherein he had substantial tenures in both. This blend gives him a unique and authoritative position in understanding the risk environment in the country in specific relation to Corporate vulnerabilities. He understands the corporate needs and advises TACT India on critical issues. He is also the centre of excellence with respect to aviation related risk projects. 

 Mr. P. N. Thanawala

Corporate Advisor 

A Veteran of the Indian industries, Mr. Thanawala is a post-graduate in law and has more than 20 years exclusive experience in Brand Protection Operations, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations.  He has held the prestigious post of Group Manager - India for a reputed company in the Synthetic Fiber Industry looking after labour, personnel and statutory compliances.

He has also been a consultant to a premier organization in the Stationery Industry; auditing their compliances, advising them on trademarks, copy right, patent and registrations.

He spearheaded the firm’s IPR protection initiatives, where in he utilized all the avenues of the government enforcement machinery and which has over the years networked him well with the enforcement and Senior Police Personnel across the country. Thanawala’s experience of enforcement actions is not limited to India alone but extends to the Indian Sub-continent and China. This strength is leveraged extensively at TACT India.

He has been instrumental in doing registrations of trademarks across 70 countries worldwide. 

With him Mr. Thanawala brings an insight into the IPR protection arena, statutory compliance, registration issues and protection available in the various countries that he has experience of thus bringing the international perspective and knowledge to TACT India.  


Akhilesh Kapoor


Director

Akhilesh is recognized as one among the few extremely experienced IPR & Brand protection consultants in India and the surrounding region on the back of his sustained success in producing both preventive and post incident solutions in this area to his largely MNC clients.

An alumnus of the joint services National Defense Academy and the army centric Indian Military Academy, Akhilesh was commissioned into the elite Brigade of the Guards in Jan 1988. He is a trained para trooper and gained extensive experience of high conflict situations ranging from conventional warfare, counter terrorism and anti-insurgency initiatives along with sensitive internal security deployments.

On his premature release from the Indian army, Akhilesh was handpicked to lead the regional security apparatus of India’s largest commercial airline in North India. His key deliverables include anti hijacking preparedness, passenger profiling, crises management and security audit.

Seizing the opportunities thrown up by the increased incidence of multinationals in India following the economic liberalization program, Akhilesh chose to move on to a Delhi based national consulting role with an Asian leader in risk consulting in Oct 1999. While he led the brand protection vertical for the firm, he was also a significant contributor to executive protection, commercial investigations and risk reports across India. The engagement with this risk consulting firm sharpened Akhilesh’s focus on the service providing space which gave him a unique blend of client and service provider perspectives.

In December 2001 Akhilesh incorporated TACT as one of its founding members. Several MNC and Indian companies regularly draw on Akhilesh’s expertise in protecting their brands, so do a number of industry associations. Alongside, Akhilesh built related risk mitigation verticals like due diligence, commercial enquiries, employment & vendor screening, security audits and executive protection to broaden the firm’s portfolio of services.

Akhilesh is a member of the International Trademark Association’s (INTA’s) Anti-counterfeiting and Enforcement Sub-committee for South Asia, Middle east and Africa apart from being a member of CFE and ASIS.

Akhilesh is a regular delegate at international conferences focused on risk mitigation in Asia Pacific as well as North America.


D S Chauhan                                                  

Regional Director – West India

A former Deputy Superintendent of the Police, Chauhan is a civil aviation security specialist. A significant part of his career with the police force was spent with the federally managed Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) which is responsible for securing all of India’s civil airports.

As a key member of the BCAS, Chauhan was responsible for shaping security related policies on contingency plans, protection of vital aviation assets and safe reception of visiting dignitaries. He led the training initiative for BCAS in West India and also spearheaded security audits of existing and proposed airports.

On his premature retirement from the police force, Chauhan was sought out by India’s largest civil aviation company to perform the role of Deputy Country Head, Corporate Security. In this role, Chauhan oversaw airport security on a pan-India basis. Alongside, he was also tasked to anchor investigations and protective security.

Chauhan heads the West India operations of TACT based out of Mumbai.


Shailesh Kapoor

Senior Legal Counsel

Shailesh is a qualified legal practitioner with a stellar record in corporate litigation. Both Indian and multinational corporations are regular seekers of his professional expertise.

Over the years, he has focused on intellectual property issues, corporate arbitration, telecommunication related advisory services and regulatory compliance. He is also an authority on labor laws.

Shailesh is well positioned to render a spectrum of legal advisory services to clients of TACT either by himself and also through his battery of legal professionals employed with his firm.

His expertise has benefited several potent brand owners in protecting their intellectual assets. Shailesh is particularly in the post enforcement scenario where clients are often left to fend for themselves by most risk mitigation firms.


Jai Saxena


Director – Strategic Planning

An advertising and publishing professional, Saxena lends his business planning acumen to TACT. His vision on the industry and business perspective provides a clear understanding of the vulnerabilities of the industry.

His potent network of contacts within Indian industry and business is also a differentiator for the firm. Saxena’s insights are also a credible input to the firm’s due diligence and vendor audit operations. His professional reach extends to some important government ministries whose support is at times, critical for the successful execution of client mandates by TACT.


Brigadier P.C. Bakshi (Retired),

Senior Vice President                               

Brigadier P C Bakshi is a highly qualified and versatile professional with 35 years of meritorious service in the Indian Army. Trained at the National Defense Academy, Indian Military Academy, School of Artillery and the Defense Services Staff College (a program where only the top 10% of officers of the rank of Major/equivalent qualify), he is a graduate of Artillery and has a Masters Degree in Military Science.

He has been an instructor at the Army War College and School of Artillery; both of them being premium training establishments of the Army that also impart training to foreign officer students. He was the Chairman of a federally funded school for two years.

He has commanded large independent formations with superlative results. Brigadier Bakshi held prestigious appointments in perspective planning in the Army Head Quarters and was involved in futuristic projections with financial implications.  He is trained in delivering credible security and risk management solutions for the corporate sector in a dynamic environment.

Following his retirement from the forces, he successfully concluded a consultant’s assignment as a General Manager in an international textile mill in Africa.

At TACT, he is the controller of operations and has spearheaded a series of complex due diligence assignments all over India for multinationals.

 
Major General Deepak Malhotra (Retd)

Senior Vice President

A veteran Soldier and academician, with 37 yrs of experience in multifarious prestigious appointments in command and Staff, he has tremendous experience in operations and operational planning at all levels while serving in the Indian Army in India and abroad.

He has accredited himself with great successes in planning and execution of Counter Insurgency Operations in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Punjab when militancy was at its highest level. He was recommended for numerous awards and appreciations and received several acknowledgements.

He has attended prestigious courses viz the Strategic Planning and International Security Course at National Defence College, New Delhi; Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and was nominated to the Higher Command Course (Air).

He is an outstanding Helicopter pilot with plenty of experience both in the mountains and plains, in the North-East India and Sri Lanka (LTTE infested areas). He has been the architect of employment of Artillery on the Western Front.

As Commandant of the Services Selection Centre at Bangalore, he qualified with distinction in Human Resources Management Course at Defence Institute of Psychological Research, New Delhi. He was responsible for selection of officers for the elite Indian Army and Indian Navy, during this period. He is an experienced interviewer and leverages psychometric techniques to assess people, their truthfulness, behavioral patterns and normally invisible facets of personality.

He has also had a long distinguished experience in Management of more than 40,000 Officers cadre of the Indian Army and planned the management structure which is still in practice after 15 yrs.

As leader of the purchase department in the Indian Army, he transacted on several corporate deals and issues related to tenders and agreements at international levels. He was also involved in investigation of internal / external collusions in mega-deals that invariably come into play. He has crystallized myriad contractual agreements and monitored mandatory contractual obligations with error free results. He was associated with large corporate houses across the world, during this period.

He is a visiting faculty member of a prestigious Business School in New Delhi.

At TACT India he is the Practice Head,  Commercial investigations and Risk Management and associated with complex investigations, risk reports, security audits and Due diligence.  He is a versatile investigator and excels in conducting inquiries and preparing analytical reports.
